Montera/Joaquin Miller School Pedestrian Improvement Project

The pedestrian situation leading to two schools is dangerous and needs improvement immediately. Currently, we have

  • one deteriorating dirt and partial asphalt pathway that is more dangerous than useful
  • no off-school property student drop-off/pick-up locations that are safe and established
  • no effective and safe crosswalk access to the schools
  • bus stops that are a simple galvanized pole with sign stuck in the ground.

A comprehensive plan to improve the pedestrian situation must be instituted to increase the safety of the students and other pedestrians, in an effective effort to increase the walk to school safety.

PATHWAYS

  1. Improve an asphalt pathway from Scout/Ascot intersection on the north side of Ascot, traveling along Ascot towards Joaquin Miller School, in front of JM School, to Montera School, in front of Montera School, following the existing pathway all the way down Ascot/Mountain to Scout. There are some sections that will require a small set of stairs.
    • New lighting throughout pathway from Scout to Scout
    • Access to bus stops and to crosswalks throughout length
    • Paint-only pathway when crossing over established driveways and parking spaces between Mountaingate and Mont era School.
  2. Establish an asphalt pathway from Mountain through to La Cuesta to Camino Lenada to Mountaingate, along the South side of Ascot.
  3. Establish an asphalt pathway along Mountain from intersection with Ascot to the tunnel under Highway 13.
