Mail Theft Reports

The USPS provides us with data on mail thefts that have been reported to them. The following data is the latest provided. We have received no reports since May 05. Note this information is only being provided for Zip Code 94611 at this time and, in our opinion, is not a true reflection of what is happening in our area. Unreported thefts, if reported, would change these numbers significantly.

Here's an example of one mail theft that happened recently:

  • The theft occurred at 431 Pershing Drive on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 3:00 PM.
  • A contractor was leaving the house and observed someone removing mail from the mail box.
  • When observed, the culprit ran to her car and sped away.
    • The description was a silver 4-door sedan and a large African-American lady.
    • Unfortunately, the contractor did not get an exact make & model on the car.
    • He did get a partial plate which was 4CL...81.
  • He immediately advised the owner of the house and they called 911, as they felt the lady could still be in the area; however, they were redirected to call the Post Office.
  • The owner called the Post Office and left information on a recording.

There are two steps that MSIC suggests be taken in the above situation:

  1. Notify USPS Inspectors at 510 251-3013 of the possible crime so they can enter it in their database to track patterns (the culprit may show up again in another neighborhood).
  2. Notify the Oakland Police non-emergency line, 777-3333, to file a report so the OPD can enter it in their database to track patterns.

While the USPS and OPD may not be able to respond to individual situations, the more information we feed to them the more able they are able to track patterns that can lead to catching the culprits.
